Geology
The Tertiary Ganges-Brahmaputra alluvium and Cretaceous Rajmahal Volcanics separates the Shillong plateau from the Peninsular India. Noteworthy of mention, the Shillong plateau extends to an area of about 40000 square km along the 25 degree 20’N and 26 degree 30’N latitude and 90 degree E- 93 degree 50’E longitude. Shillong Plateau is an East to West trending oblong horst block which is uplifted about 600 to 1800 m above the plains of Bangladesh in the south which was an origin from the collision of the Indian and Tibetian plates during the Cenozoic. The plateau of Shillong is further bounded and dissected by several East to West and North to South trending faults known as the Dauki Fault, Brahmaputra Fault, and Jamuna Fault.
Geography
Located amid the northeastern shackle of India, Shillong is an exhilarating hill station attracting a spectrum of tourists throughout the year. By virtue of its beauty and rolling hills encircling the entire state, it often reflects the British of Scotland, and hence, its name is referred to the “Scotland of the East”. Shillong lies on the Shillong Plateau, nestled in the East Khasi Hills District. The enthralling city, residing as the charming capital city of Meghalaya, is sprawling at an altitude of 1,491 m above sea level. It is around 99 km away from the city of Guwahati.

MEGHALAYA

Geology
The presence of diversified rocks, characterizes the geological extent of Meghalaya. The formation of the contrasting sedimentary rocks was initiated by the tertiary time and shallow marine shelf. However, Assam, as the geosynclinal condition was also prevalent in the neighboring areas. Gradually the succession of the Meghalayan shelf was generalized and modified by the Geological Survey of India. The Meghalayan shelf comprises of alternating thick succession of clastic and carbonates sedimentary rock sequence in the lower tertiary sequence. Along the southern fringe of Meghalayan plateau, the rock sequences exposes in the form of a linear belt.
Geography
Meghalaya, the heavenly abode of clouds, is magnificently carved out from the erstwhile state of Assam. Enclosed with the territories of Assam and Bangladesh, Meghalaya is dwelling as the state city of Shillong. Meghalaya is an alluring state lying in the north eastern hub of India. The state is situated at a distance of 192 km from the megacity of Guwahati. It is surrounded by districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and so on.
