Assam

Assam, an iconic part of the seven sisters of North East India, is a state rich in cultural and traditional significance. The diverse population of Assam is bound in the gothic fusion of Indo Burmese, Mongolian, and cultures and traditions. The paradisiacal land of Assam is not only vibrant in colors of nature but is also painted bright in colors of traditional festivities. The traditional festivals of Assam include Bihu- celebrated anually to commemorate the crucial points of a cultivator’s life. Other festivals include, Maghe Bihu, Rongali Bihu, and Ali-Ai-Ligan. Traditional dances of Assam include Ojapali, Devdasi and Satriya. Most of the Assamese woman are adorn themselves in their traditional Mekhla Chador and the men are found wearing suria or dhoti along with a chadar called Seleng.

Kaziranga

Kaziranga National Park inspires many artisans and handicrafts made by them are popular souvenirs for tourists to take home after their trip. Statues of all the animals that call the Kaziranga National Park their home can be found in these souvenir shops. A very popular event organised in the park is the annual Kaziranga Elephant Festival. The festival is celebrated to promote conservation and protection efforts of the Asiatic elephant. The festival is jointly organised by the Forest Department and Tourism Department of Assam. The intention of this festival is to highlight and find ways to resolve the increasing number of conflicts between man and elephant. Over a hundred domesticated Asiatic elephants participate in the festival and are decorated from head to toe. The elephants participate in a parade, compete in races, play football and put on a memorable dance performance.\n\nAlso worth trying, are the various delicacies that are a part of Assamese cuisine, which is defined by the limited use of spices, and distinctly strong flavours, produced from the use of exotic fruits and vegetables. Khar, Masor Tenga, Pura, Poitabhat, Pitika, Bor, Pokori, Posola and Panitenga are some of the popular dishes that are a part of Assamese cuisine. Purchasing some of their pickles, chutneys and rice beers, should be well worth your money as they are quite delicious.
